The National Association of School Governors describes the role of Governors as "best thought of as trustees for the performance of the school, in the interest of current and future pupils. In everything they do, they must by law aim to promote high standards of educational achievement at the school; must act with integrity, objectivity and honesty in the best interests of the school; and must be open about their decisions and ready to explain them to interested persons." In short the role of the Governor is to be a "critical friend".
